Student work pieces

At the NVvW 2019 study day, three helpful children asked if I may need their help. I was curious how far they would come with a minimal explanation. They quickly realized the system of papers with red arrows and green lines and they quickly discovered which 3D piece belonged to which paper. Within half an hour I received the photos below.
Math teachers, on the other hand, work much more thoughtfully, go for complete understanding, and needed more time.
In 2019, we did a 45 minutes workshop for the HWC Science Club, children age 11+.

In 2021, we did a two-hour workshop for young Dutch children, age 9+ on the geometry of muqarnas. We did a workshop for young Dutch children, age 9+ on the geometry of muqarnas. We invited them to assemble muqarnas with Lego-like building blocks. After a short cultural introduction, the children investigated the building blocks. Questions like how to connect the blocks, how to stack, when will the result be convex, a line or concave? A low-cost 3D printer printed thousands of building blocks. The printer was not expensive, but it took hundreds of (unattended) printing hours to fill six box of 300+ items each. We gave the children an exercise sheet to create a two-level muqarnas. Most of them recognized swiftly which block fits where, but a few were overwhelmed by the variety of blocks.

In 2024, we were invited at Valuas College. One of the participants wanted toe construct many more muqarnas. We gave her the opportunity to take two boxes for exxperimenting.

Starting assignment young students

Young students start with a simple assignment where the rules are quickly discovered. This two-layer muqarnas follows the rule "back on front". Students were handed over a construction plate for a quick start.

Variations for the same construction plate

While the printer is serviced for regular maintenance, Max has ideas for variations which all fit at the same construction plate. An extension to the easy assignment is the task to generate alternatives.
